Five Places to Celebrate the Fourth in Albuquerque
June 30, 2009
Looking for a fun thing to do this weekend to celebrate Independence Day? Here are five Fourth of July parties that you may want to attend with your family.
1. Corrales Fourth of July Parade: This parade in Corrales is my favorite way to celebrate the Fourth in Albuquerque. Watch old cars, costumed pets, horses, llamas, decorated bicycles and a kazoo band parade down Corrales Rd. Then, walk down to the park for a family fun day. The parade begins at 10:00 am and runs south down Corrales Rd.
2. Albuquerque Freedom Fourth 2009: Enjoy live music, food vendors, inflatable jumpers, face painting, and juggling. There will also be a fireworks display at approximately 9:30. Admission is $2 for adults and children 12 and under get in free. The festivities take place at Balloon Fiesta Park. You can pick up a free park n ride shuttle at St. Pius High School on the West Side or Coronado Mall on the East side. Food and coolers are welcome at the event, but check the website for specific guidelines. The fun kicks off at 4:00 pm and gates open at 3:00 pm.
3. Rio Rancho Fourth Festivities: Rio Rancho hosts a parade as well. It starts at Country Club drive and heads east along Southern Blvd. to the Veterans Monument Park. Children are invited to participate by riding decorated bicycles. Prizes will be given away. Registration for the bike contest begins at 9:00 am at the Albertson's parking lot on Southern Blvd. After the parade, at 11:00 am, is a ceremony featuring several guest speakers and the Rio Rancho Mayor. The ceremony will be held at the park. There will be fireworks, music, food, and other activities that evening beginning at 4:00 pm at Loma Colorado Park.
4.Los Lunas Fourth Activities: The parade in Los Lunas begins at 9:00 am. at the Valencia "Y" Area and ending at City Hall. There will be live entertainment and fireworks beginning at 4:00 pm. at Daniel Fernandez Memorial Park.
5. Your Own Backyard: Fire up the grill, fill up an inflatable pool (or some water balloons) and when night falls, look to the skies, you'll probably catch a decent fireworks show courtesy of your neighbors.
Happy Independence Day!

Weekly Round-up: The New (To Us) Park Edition
March 12, 2009
I recently updated the post, 99 Things to Do in Albuquerque Before Your Child Grows Up , to actually include 99 things! I received a lot of help and ideas from others and while compiling them all, I got so excited to actually do some of them! It's my hope that at least twice a month, I'll venture out with the kids and cross off one of the things on the list. This week, we explored a new playground (#43). We went to Columbus Park , which is located near Griegos and 12th St. The boys both had a great time. It's a large park with lots of grass, tennis courts, covered picnic tables, basketball courts, and of course play equipment! It was perfect for the preschool crowd and grade schoolers would enjoy it too. My 20-month-old had fun running around on all the ramps and there weren't too many places where I was afraid he might try and jump off!
