One Thing That Really Matters to Preschoolers and Five Ways to Achieve It

January 06, 2009

All parents know the one thing that really matters to preschoolers.  They want the love and attention of their parents.  Spending quality time with your kids can sometimes be difficult because kid fun doesn't always equal parent fun.  Here are five ideas for some parent/kid fun time:

Plan a "Date": You probably spend lots of time together as a family, but how often do you get one-on-one time doing something a bit out of the ordinary with your preschooler?  Visit the Biopark, or Explora (lots of great kid friendly and adult friendly activities there!).  Or you could try miniature golfing or bowling (you might consider here, here or here for bowling as well).  If you're excited about the activity, chances are your preschooler will be as well.

Bring Her to Work:  If possible, have your spouse bring your child in to visit you at work, you could enjoy lunch together or just show her around your office.  Give her a small task to do to make her feel extra important.

Play a Game: Get out a deck of cards and teach him a classic game such as Go Fish or Slapjack.  Uno is simple enough for a four-year-old, and a favorite adult game as well.

Make Something Together: Involve your child in a baking project, or let him help you with dinner.  Preschoolers can do many basic kitchen tasks, such as measure and pour ingredients, stir, gather ingredients or kitchen tools, wash fruits and vegetables, and of course help you clean up afterwards!  If you're not all that handy in the kitchen, bring out the paper, scissors, glue, and any random art supplies you can find and create collages or another work of art.

Go Outside:  Okay, so maybe not in January, but certainly when the weather is warmer.  We all enjoy being outside, and my two favorite places to go with my kids are the Nature Center or just for a walk in the Bosque.
