Albuquerque Holiday Traditions
December 02, 2008
Regardless of what celebrations your family observes this time of year, it is definitely a season full of traditions and rituals.
Traditions give us all something fun to look forward to year after
year. Here are some wonderful Albuquerque traditions that you can
share with your family.
Tamales
For many New Mexicans, Christmas just isn't Christmas without some
freshly made tamales! Even if you don't make some yourself (and really
it isn't that difficult), pick some up from your neighborhood tamale
salesman, because you know you're bound to run into someone who is
selling them, or order a dozen from a local restaurant.
Luminarias
A simple, yet elegant, decoration that you'll see all over Albuquerque
this time of year. Make some of your own with your children, or just
visit some neighborhoods and sites all decked out for the Holiday.
Parades
Albuquerque and Belen already held their light parades, but you can catch Rio Rancho's and Corrales' this weekend. The Winterfest Parade
on Saturday, Dec. 6 begins at 5:15 at Golf Course and Southern in Rio
Rancho and will travel east to the former City Hall site. The
Starlight Parade in Corrales is also this Saturday and begins at 5:30.
Call 350-3955 for more information on the parade in Corrales.
Old Town Holiday Stroll
Touted as Albuquerque's biggest Christmas Party, there will be live
entertainment, a Christmas tree lighting, lots of luminarias, and a
visit from Santa Claus. This year's event will be held Friday, Dec.
5. Visit the Old Town website to see a complete schedule of events.
River of Lights
The River of Lights at the Botanic Gardens is
the largest walk-through light show in the state. It began last
weekend and goes through the end of the month. Visit the city's website for more information.
